AUGUST 28, 2018 - SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOW
A sanitary sewer overflow has occurred at the City of Port Washington’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The overflow occurred from approximately 3:00 a.m. until approximately 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27, 2018. This overflow occurred through the manholes at the entrance to the plant. In addition, there was sewer overflow at various manholes on Jackson Street, between Wisconsin and Lake Street. A high amount of inflow was experienced due to the large amount of rain that fell the morning of August 27, 2018. City of Port Washington Wastewater personnel have responded to the incident, and have contained the overflow to the treatment plant to limit harm to the public and the environment. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been notified. Pursuant to the requirements of NR 210, this press release is being issued regarding this event. The City of Port Washington is hoping to make improvements to its collection system to limit these types of incidents in the future. Residents are encouraged to make sure that sump pumps or foundation drains are not connected to the sanitary sewer system. This will assist in reducing flow amounts. For more information contact: Dan Buehler, Wastewater Supt., at 262-284-5051.

BASEMENT BACK-UPS
If you discover sewage backing up through your basement floor drain, you are asked to please notify the City prior to contacting a plumber. This allows the City to determine whether the blockage causing the back-up is located in the sewer main or in the sewer lateral. If the blockage is in the main, City crews will be able to correct it in the shortest time frame possible. If the blockage is in the house’s lateral, City crews will instruct you to call a plumber. Please contact City Hall if you experience a basement back-up at 262-284-2600 during normal business hours, or, outside of normal business hours, contact the Port Washington Police Department at 262-284-2611.

WILL IT FLUSH?
Although products like facial tissues, dental floss, cotton swabs, and kitty litter may flush down the toilet, they can cause clogged pipes for you and your neighbors. Watch the video below to find out more, from the City of Spokane Department of Wastewater Management.
