City of Port Washington - Mayor's Office

A Message From The Mayor

April, 2015

Dear City Residents:

HAPPY SPRING! While winter along the lake can indeed be very beautiful, there is something about the sun and winds turning warmer and the colors becoming more vibrant that does inspire such a sense of new hope.

Vibrant. Beyond being a great adjective for the colors of Spring and Summer, it is also a great adjective for our City of Port Washington these days. As I hear often in meetings and conversations with people based locally and throughout our State, "Port is clearly a city on the move." Indeed - and we've all had a role in that movement!

This Spring and Summer will be no different. There is so much happening and so much to celebrate! Here are just a few of the exciting things occurring in the very near future:

  • The Historical Society's Port Exploreum opens its doors in just a few weeks. The Exploreum represents a nearly $3 million community-wide investment and will celebrate our city's very proud maritime past and local history while engaging visitors in its present and future.
  • Thanks to the work of our partners at Ozaukee County Mountain Bike Club, our two-mile multi-use offroad trail connected to the Interurban Trail will re-open (weather permitting!) very soon, providing more outdoor recreation opportunities (biking, hiking, running) for residents and visitors.
  • In June, we will officially dedicate our Memorial Pavilion out on Coal Dock Park in time for Summer use.
  • Our North Beach Public Access Improvement project, a $500,000 lakefront investment, will be finished.
  • Working collaboratively, our Main Street Program, city staff, and city Marketing & Communications Committee will install new way-finding signage throughout the city, highlighting major destination points and incorporating our city brand.
  • The Army Corps of Engineers will arrive in late July for two months of work on the north breakwater, launching another $1.5 million in outside investment we've collectively procured.

So, lots to celebrate, and lots for us to do. And, you can help! I have always believed and advocated we can all truly make a difference, and we are now seeing that is the case with the efforts of the hundreds of talented, dedicated volunteers who are working on our various committees, boards, teams, and commissions.
